Phase 1 of PAN Localization project focused on developing local language standards and technology across seven Asian countries. The countries (and languages) included in the project were Afghanistan (pashto), Bangladesh (Bangla), Bhutan (Dzongkha), Cambodia (Khmer), Laos (Lao), Nepal (Nepali) and Sri Lanka (Sinhala, Tamil).

 

Training

The Project carried out an extensive and diverse training program to raise capacity to develop language technology across all partner countries, Training was imparted in linguistics, standards development, open source software localization, speech processing, script processing and computational linguistics. Following types of programs were organized and supported through the project.

 

  • National Seminars and Workshops
  • Regional Workshops
  • Mentor Placement Program
  • Conference Attendance Program
  • International Training Attendance Program
  • Sponsorship of Degree Program
  • Summer School in Asian Language Processing
  • International Collaborative Network

Local Language Software

The Project teams have also produced and are further maturing the following applocations.

 

  • Keyboard, Locale, Collation Standards and Fonts for Pashto, Bangla, Dzongkha, Khmer, Lao and Nepali
  • Terminology Standards and Linux distributions for Bangla, Lao and Sinhala
  • Lexica and Spell Checkers for Bangla, Dzongkha, Khmer, Nepali, Sinhala and Tamil
  • Text to Speech System for Sinhala

Local Language Computing Policy
Work on policy started ear;u in the project. Formal and informal interactions have been going on at national levels with all relevant organizations, including IT and culture ministries, language authorities and relevant language commissions from the onset of the project. The work culminated in a regional consultation on local language computing policy, attended by a diverse group of policy makers, practitioners, researchers and social scientists from across Asia, Details are available at the project website (under the Activities link).
